Rail Safety

The CPUC is the state agency that oversees rail safety in California. This oversight can be broken down into three areas: 1) Railroad Safety; 2) Rail Transit Safety; and 3) Rail Crossing Safety.

Railroad Safety (such as freight trains)

The CPUC employs federally certified inspectors to ensure that railroads comply with both federal and state railroad safety regulations.

Rail Transit Safety (such as light rail or subways)

The CPUC has safety and security regulatory authority over all rail transit agencies in California and works in cooperation with the Federal Transit Administration and the transit agencies to enhance public safety and security.

Rail Crossing Safety (such as roadways over track)

The CPUC is the state agency with exclusive jurisdiction over rail crossings in California. CPUC engineers evaluate the safety of rail crossings and review proposed construction where roadways or pathways cross railroad or rail transit tracks.
